The Award in Islands, Small States and Archipelago Studies is a 10 ECTS postgraduate course designed to give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of islands, small states, and archipelago studies. Whether you're a Maltese or international student, or simply part of the general public with an interest in these areas, this programme invites you to explore a range of introductory topics - including economics, biogeography and environmental studies, sociology, and anthropology. Throughout the course, you鈥檒l examine these subjects through the lens of island, small island developing state, and archipelago studies, helping you better understand the complexity and uniqueness of these spaces.

ISS5200* Introduction to the Study of Islands and Small States 1: Economic and Environmental Issues 5 ECTS      
ISS5210* Introduction to the Study of Islands and Small States 2: Social and Political Issues 5 ECTS      

 
* Both study-units start in the Summer Semester of acadmic year 2024-5 and continue up to the end of Semester 2 of acadmic year 2025-6.

This programme of study is governed by the Regulations for Micro-credentials, 2024.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify key social, political, economic, and environmental issues in islands and small states, and compile a critical summary of the existing literature in a written assignment that you will submit at the end of the course;
  • Discuss the contemporary debates surrounding social, political, economic, and environmental issues in islands and small states, including applying insights from selected case studies explored during the lectures, in a written proposal that you will submit at the end of the course.
